In 962 in Rome, the Pope crowned Otto the Great, considered the founder of the Holy Roman Empire. After two centuries of expansion, this coronation marked the apogee of Saxon civilization, magnified by legends but whose historical origins remain unclear. Who were these great rivals of the Franks who, under the battering of Charlemagne's armies, would eventually convert and swell the ranks of the Christians? Did they even see themselves as a united people? Through an imaginary conversation between the chronicler monk Widukind of Corvey, who wrote a history of the Saxons in the 10th century, and the granddaughter of Emperor Otto, a corner of the veil is lifted...
