Rabinowitz, chantre d'une synagogue, souhaite que son fils Jakie lui succède. Mais celui-ci préfère le jazz. Chassé par son père, il devient célèbre, maquillé en noir, comme vedette de jazz, sous le nom de Jack Robin.
